Start with the outcome
Define the time, error, delay, cost, or service problem first. A useful solution has a result that can be observed and a person responsible for it.
Work with the systems you already have
Most projects should connect or improve tools already in place. Replacing a core system is a separate decision and should be justified on its own.
Design for ownership
Access, documentation, exception handling, and maintenance are part of the build. A system is not finished if only its builder can operate it.
